Which Nuby Bottles, Sippys, Teethers and Utensils Are Really BPA Free?

UPDATED July 1, 2008

NOTE:  Some Nuby products sold internationally are different than those sold here in the U.S.  If you live outside the U.S., please check with your local manufacturer to confirm the materials used in their products.

We’ve worked closely with the company to confirm which items are officially BPA free. Is that Nuby cup your child is drinking from actually BPA free? Before you throw it out in a panic, let me shed some light on the subject. Nuby (a subsidiary of Luv ‘n Care) offers BPA free baby feeding gear, but their naming system can be confusing. So many BPA free items sound just like others that do contain BPA.

We’ve included pictures to help further reduce confusion. Nuby also confirmed that they do not use PVC or phthalates in ANY of their products.

BPA & PVC Free Nuby Bottles:

10oz Wide Neck Bottle with Handles

8oz Non-Drip Wide Neck Bottles

10oz 3 Stage Wide Neck Feeding System

11oz Non-Drip Standard Bottles 3pk

7oz Non-Drip Standard Bottles 3pk

10 oz Tinted Standard Bottles with Non-drip Nipple 3 Pack

7oz and 11 oz 3 Stage Standard Bottle w/ handles (not to be confused with the 3 Stage polycarbonate bottles seen below)

BPA Free Nuby Sippy Cups:

6oz Basic Sippy Tumbler

10 oz Easy Grip No-Spill Sipper with soft silicone spout

Also called the Gripper Cup with soft silicone spout

Easy Grip 10 oz No-Spill Sports Sipper

10 oz 2 Handle Cup with Soft Silicone Spout

Also called 2 Handle No-spill 10 oz Cup

12 oz No-Spill Sport Sipper

Also called 12 oz No-spill Gripper (or Easy Grip) Sport Sipper

9 oz Printed Insulated No-spill Cup with Silicone Spout 2 Pack
9oz No-spill Printed Cup with Silicone Spout 2 pack

14 oz Tinted Flip-It Leak-proof Straw Cup

Also called the 10 & 14 oz Sport Sipper (BPA in flip-it straw cover)

12 oz No-spill Mega Sipper With Fat Flip-It Straw

Also called 12 oz Mega Sipper, and

12oz No-Spill Sipper with Flip it Straw

9oz No-Spill Printed Cup with Flip-it Straw (BPA in flip-it straw cover)
Insulated 9 oz Printed Cup with Flip-It Straw (now BPA free)
11oz Insulated Magic Motion Flip-it Cup (BPA in flip it straw cover)
9oz Insulated No-spill Cup with Flip-it Cap 2 Pack (BPA in flip-it cap)

*NOTE on all Nuby Flip-it Cups:

We contacted Nuby to confirm where the BPA is located in the Flip-it cups. Our Nuby rep has been more than willing to help, so he dove right in to figure out what was going on. He confirmed that the Nuby flip-it cups contain some BPA in the flip-it cover.

We have chosen to continue recommending the cups because the liquid does not come in contact with the cover. Please continue using your own discretion when purchasing.

UPDATE 4/18/08: Nuby has decided to remove BPA from the 12oz No-Spill Sipper with Flip it Straw cup. They are not yet available, but will be soon. We’ll keep you updated on it.

BPA Free Nuby Teethers:

So after all the fuss, we’ve come to find that Nuby does provide some affordable alternatives in several different areas. Hopefully we’ve helped alleviate some of the confusion.

  1. Great list! Thanks for posting this.

  2. what a great list! I’m curious if the smaller leak-proof handled sippy cup is BPA free, though….

  3. Thanks for posting this.

Is there a place where I could ask more questions?

  4. Hi Wendy,

We’re always happy to answer any question we can, so please feel free to email us at info@thesoftlanding.com anytime.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by,

    Alicia

  5. Hi,

My son has been using Nu-by bottles for a year now. But his Nu-by bottles model is not included in the pictures above. Are all Nu-by bottles BPA free? I just had to ask because it worries me that his Nu-by bottles are not in the pictures above. The nipples too are nu-by with the dots on the outside, but it is not the spill-free type. Are they bpa free also? I bought new ones, but the older model are no longer available. I got the new ones that are made in Thailand, with softer and longer nipples. Are they safe too? Thanks a lot.

  6. Hi Chloe,

We have been told by Nuby that the bottles pictured above are currently the only ones that are BPA free. If you have an older model, you very well may have a non-toxic bottle.

Since manufacturers are not required to label their products, we really have no way of knowing. Our info from Nuby is current as of October 2007, so anything made before that time is outside our scope of knowledge. Sorry, I wish this issue wasn’t so confusing and that we could be of more help!

The nipples you are using are made from silicone, so they are non-toxic (as are all silicone nipples).

    Thanks so much,

    Alicia

  7. This is great information. My son loved nuby products. However, as he got older he had a tendency to chew threw them and we had to switch to hard plastic cups. Wonder what is in them?

  8. Gah!! It still makes me freakin’ mad. I had that bottle with the handles too. He wasn’t a fan of it, but I bought it because it was a good bottle to sippy transition.

    *slams forehead on desk*

But I am really glad that you posted this. I may reinvest in some of the cups that I had.

  9. I’m sorry, I’m not totally clear. Are the nuby two handled cups with straws BPA free?

  10. Hi Elizabeth,

I don’t know exactly which Nuby cup you’re wondering about without looking at a picture. Would you email me a link to the product you’re wondering about at info@thesoftlanding.com?

I’ll do some research and get back to you on it.

    Thanks,

    Alicia

  11. [...] Here is a brand called Nuby, with more affordable options, but there is a bit of confusion about which products might contain BPA, and which might not. My gut reaction would be to avoid them altogether, but you can check out a thorough review of Nuby’s products for yourself. [...]

  12. I have a 10oz Nuby Easy Grip cup that I purchased recently. On the bottom it has 2002 as the year also the number 3. I’m concerned that the 3 means PVC. Does anyone else see this on their cups? I emailed the company about the 3 and have not heard back.

    Thanks!
    Lisa

  13. Hi Lisa,

A lot of the Nuby and Sassy products have odd numbers on the bottom, none of which are in reference to the recycling number.

The Nuby 10oz Easy Grip cup has an “E” on the bottom that resembles a “3.” One thing to keep in mind that typically the recycling number will be in the center of the universal recycling symbol (three arrows circling to the right).

    Hope that helps,

    Alicia

  14. I just purchased Nuby bottles to replace Dr. Brown bottles that may be toxic. The Nuby bottles I purchased state on the package that they are BPA free. Can I believe that, or should I be skeptical?
    Thanks so much!

  15. Hi Kristen,

If it’s the Nuby company who has advertised them as safe on the package, I would be inclined to believe it. They would be placing themselves at a huge disadvantage by lying about it.

Have you had a chance to compare the bottles to the list we received from Nuby? If the bottles are listed there, then they are made from polypropylene, which is considered non-toxic.

    Alicia

  16. http://www.nuby.platformtwo.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=18&Itemid=34&lang=en

This is the link to the Nuby polyproplyene line.

  17. Thanks for the link, Jodi.

After talking with the our Nuby rep about the products listed on the main Nuby website (and after letting them know how confused I was that they didn’t all match the list I had been given), they explained to me that some of the products you see listed there may not be available here in the US. There are also products that are available here, and not available internationally.

Just something to keep in mind when trying to differentiate between what is toxic and what is not.

    Alicia

  18. I am looking for some help on deciphering what is okay and what is not. :)
Are the Nuby Wide Neck 10oz. and 8oz. bottles non BPA?

    Thank you.

  19. I would like toknow what nuby cups r BPA and phthalate free

  20. Hi Micki33,

All the non-toxic Nuby products we have listed are both BPA free and phthalate free.

    Thanks,

    Alicia

  21. I purchased one easy grip no spill 10 oz sipper online because it was advertised as bpa free. I wanted to try it out before buying any more. I then saw them at a store for less $$ so I bought more. I compared the cups when I got home and they look to be different. The one from walmart seems to be made of a cloudier and softer plastic than the one I purchased online. The packaging looked the same, however the TM dates on the bottom were different. Just wondering if its safe to assume that neither of them have BPA in them????

  22. Hi Alicia,
I have just gone out and purchased 4 10oz/ 295 ml “No-Spill Cups” (with the silicone spout). They look absolutely identical to what you are referring to as the 10 oz “sipper” or “easy grip”, and have no handle. I know it looks identical because I brought the list with pictures of the “NUBY BPA free” products when I was doing my shopping. It is not called a “sipper, or “easy grip” though, eventhough it looks exactly like it. The bottles are foggy and come in different colours of plastic, and all I can find under the cups are: copywright 2002, 295ml/10oz, and the NUBY logo. Are these cups okay?
Also just an FYI for the owners of the 3 pack coloured BPA free 295ml bottles. We found that our 6 month old son just couldn’t get the milk out of the vari-flow style nipple, so we purchased Gerber fast flow nipples and they work just great with this Nuby standard neck bottle
    Thanks
    Sophie.

  23. Thank you so much for this resource. This is great news and I’m thankful Nuby has provided an affordable BPA free option for my daughter!

  24. Hi Amy and Sophie,

You’ve both raised a question that more people are wondering about.

We’ve confirmed that Nuby’s “recipe” for their products hasn’t changed in many years. We’ve also confirmed that if the product looks exactly the same as the ones we have listed, they are.

One key piece of information we’ve recently discovered is that polypropylene (PP) can be processed differently, causing a varied look:

    1) Clarified PP has more of a see-through quality.
    2) Un-clarified PP has a cloudier, more opaque quality.

Some products use both types of PP, but regardless, the plastic is still non-toxic (as there are no plasticizers added), it just looks a little different.

A great example of this difference is in the Nuby 10oz gripper sippy cup: the body is more clear and see-through, while the lid is more opaque.

Hope that helps. We’ll be adding a post addressing this specific information.

    Alicia

  25. Thank you for this posting. I unfortunately, used Avent bottles, which are apparently quite toxic. Then before the news releases on toxicity I began replacing bottles with Gerber (also toxic) sippy cups to get my daughter off of the bottle. Next, I found my daughter to have difficulty with the Gerber’s so I switched to silcone spout Nuby’s. Then BAM the releases came out…. Now after checking the list I have discovered that some of my Nuby’s contain BPA’s! Argh, I have spent a fortune on sippy’s merely to get her on the sippy and now to be told most of them are toxic… Anyway, I want to thank you for the list and I am going to just buy the sports sippy’s they are very resonably priced.

One questions though, I am purchasing mine at Canadian Walmarts, would they still be BPA free?

  26. It is very confusing. I will be replacing my BPA Nuby sippy’s now, however I am still uncertain about one… I will hold onto and not use it for now. I checked the Nuby website for the name, my cup is not exactly the same as the one on the site; its a Magic Cup -Insulated Hologram. However mine has a silicone spout unlike the one on the site and its also not listed on this page… Does anyone know about these cups?

  27. Hi Emily,
I’m not sure if this will help you, but we purchased our BPA 3 packs of bottles at a Canadian Wal-Mart. Fortunately, this 3 pkg, indicates right on the pkg that it is BPA Free. None of the other BPA Free Nuby products have this indicated on the packaging (which is a shame…they would sell alot more products if they did).

We brought the Nuby “BPA FREE” list with pictures and were able to find the 10 oz “No-Spill” cup, sold individually for $2.27, often refered to as the Sipper or Easy Grip. It is absolutely identical to the BPA Free one in the picture, and as you can read from a previous posting of mine(yesterday), it IS in fact BPA Free. I think I remember seing the 3 step type sippy cup there too (the one with nipple, spout and straw), which is also BPA Free.

They seemed to have a pretty good selection of Nuby products at this Wal-Mart, but you could also try Giant Tiger to find some of these items as well.

    Hope this helps.

  28. Hi Emily,

I just talked with our Nuby rep and he said the cup you’re asking about sounds like the Nuby 11oz Insulated Magic Motion Flip-it Cup. If so, the body of the cup itself is completely BPA free. As with all other Nuby flip-it cups, there is a small amount of BPA in the flip-it cover, which doesn’t touch the liquid. We’ve added it to our safe Nuby cup list.

    Alicia

  29. Thanks, but actually the Insulated Magic Motion Cup that I have is not a flip it, its one with a silicone top/spout similar to the other models.

    Thank you

  30. Thanks for the list. I have another 3 pack Nuby long handle spoon. It’s not either of the 2 listed above. It’s at the Canadian Walmarts. Wondering if those are bpa free?

    Thanks

  31. Just received your email and checked out the z-report. I’m once again confused about the nuby sippy cups. They have the soft spout easy grip listed as BPA free, and the no spill gripper cup listed as containing BPA. They look identical to each other and I see many websites using the names interchangeably. Im Confused? What do you think?

  32. I emailed you a picture of the sippy cups I bought today and I was hoping they were BPA free. I also bought some sectioned feeding plates, that come with a lid. Would you like me to send you a pictures of those too. I am tempted just to take them back. Let me know.

    Joanna

  33. [...] when I was about to spend $15 a pop on 4 Foogo sippies for my kids, I came across this awesome post at The Soft Landing (another Co-Op America member). They’ve done their research, and it turns [...]

  34. Just wanted to say thank you for this site. I’ve been so frustrated as a new mom, trying to figure out all the press releases and warnings and such. So glad to see so much of the information I’m looking for in one place.

  35. I use the 9oz Tinted no-spill gripper cup, but I take out the valve because I do not like to wash the extra part. Is the valve the only part with BPA? Are the cup and lid free of lead, PVC, phathalates and BPA? Thanks so very much for this helpful info! have been looking into sippys for months now and your site was the first that had info about the Nubys, which I like because they are small and fit in my purse to take along. You are providing a great service for all the concerned moms. THANKS!

  36. Thank you so much for this info!

  37. Hi, thanks for all the great info, but I noticed the link you have to their Polypropylene Line, doesn’t have all the BPA free bottles listed here. It has alot of them but not the two I actually own (12 oz No-spill Flip-it Straw Cup & Insulated 9 oz Cup with Flip-It Top) Why is this? Are they made out of a different material?

  38. Thank you for this! I am thrilled to see that our Nuby cups are on the safe list!!

  39. Thank you for putting pictures with the names, the confusion of holding a list of names and trying to match them up is crazy!

  40. I’ve bought several Nuby No-Spill Sippers/Gripper Cups with silicone spouts (no lid/cap included) at WalMart for less then $2. They seem to be of a different plastic than the first Nuby No-Spill Sipper/Gripper Cup I bought which was part of a “kit” that included 3 rings, a teething nipple, a sippy spout and a sport spout, and a lid/cap. Are the cheaper ones I’ve bought at WalMart BPA free like the first one I bought?

  41. Will you be looking at the safety of breast milk storage bags in the future?

  42. Hi Valerie,

We asked Nuby if they’ve changed their “recipe” recently and they confirmed that have not changed it in many years. So if your cups look like the ones we included in our BPA Free Nuby list, you don’t need to worry about them.

  43. Hi Jennifer,

Yes, we will be looking into the various breastmilk storage bags soon. In the meantime, ZRecs.com has noted that most breastmilk storage bags are made from polyethylene (PE) which is considered a safer plastic.

  44. Thanks so much for this great resource. I just bought 2 Nuby cups for my 2 boys tonight, and I was starting to worry that I might have accidentally picked the wrong ones! Now I know I chose a BPA free model! PHEW!

  45. What a great resource! Thanks.

I was given a Nuby CoolBite Teether as a gift, and I don’t see that product on your list of BPA safe teethers. Just wondering if you have any information on this product before I use or toss it.

    Thanks in advance.

  46. thanks thank you muchas gracias! i am so happy you did this - just wish i had seen it a while back. i work in the health food industry and have always been weird about plastic. someone told me nuby was good plastic but i never buy it b/c it does not really say much on the packaging. i have only used wooden teethers for my little one but really feel like he needs a good old fashioned teething ring LOL ….we buy what we know ? eh . it is the kind of thing i grew up with. i use frozen wash cloths etc but really wanted to buy something less natural LOL

thanks so much for this great blog - i just wish i has known of it like 3 years ago

  47. This is posted on the Nub website. It might help to clarify some of these questions. Also, on the site, if the product has pp next to is polypropelene, if it has pc it is polycarbonate.

    http://www.iluvnuby.com/docs/plastics.pdf

    Thanks for your Blog!

  48. hi,
everything we have seems to be on the nice list - however 1 item (the Nuby Two Handle Cup with Fat Flip-it Straw Top) is on the naughty list. my daughter only uses water in it - do you know what in particular is bad with it (the handles or the entire cup?). thanks.

  49. I have to thank you for this. I was just only getting born free but they are hard to get. Saw this site and am now able to see that I can get other alternatives as well!!!!!
We don’t mind spending the money if we know it’s safe for our children, why does anyone bother making things that are unsafe?

Are what some people selling in bulk on line (new product) of Nuby, safe if it is pictured on your blog? Could it be older product. I think as I’m reading the past items the older items would be safe too.
Thank you for the pictures, helps a GREAT deal!

  50. I have quite a few of the Nuby Two Handle Cup with Fat Flip-it Straw Top which you’ve listed as containing BPA. But our sippys don’t have the clear plastic, they are tinted red or green or blue depending on the sippy color. Do you know what the status of BPA is on these sippys?

  51. FYI…

I went looking today for BPA-Free sippy cups for our two boys because of all the media attention that this topic has been receiving lately - especially here in Canada, because our government is about to officially announce that BPA is a dangerous chemical and they will be banning the sale of products that contain BPA.

Apparently the Canadian governement is leading the way in declaring BPA products are dangerous. Retailers here are rushing to pull BPA products off their shelves in advance of the government’s announcement.

Interestingly, this morning when I was looking for suitable BPA-Free cups at a local retailer, one of the store employees happened to come into the aisle as I was pondering the various products on display. She had with her a list of BPA products that she was pulling from the shelves. One of which was a NUBY non-drip 3-bottle pack that I had picked up because it was labbelled as BPA-Free (both in the packaging print and with BPA-Free stickers on the front and back of the package). THIS PRODUCT WAS ON HER LIST OF PRODUCTS TO PULL OF THE SHELF!

I was confused to say the least…and she could not offer an explanation - the print-out list that she had was from head-office.

I have also seen this same product listed as BPA-Free on various website’s ie:

    http://www.diapersetc.com/products/bpa-free-non-drip-baby-bottle.html

Makes me wonder why this particular product would end up on their ‘remove’ list???

  52. I am so frustrated about this with the valves not being safe! I just got my son attached to those as they didn’t leak and they appeared to be safe, and now to find out the valves are not safe! Can’t Nuby work on that? I have spent so much money buying and tossing sippies this is maddening.

  53. Are any of the BPA-free bottles wide-necked? Will they work with an Avent nipple? My son is 7 months and has always used Avent. I don’t want to spend a lot of money on new bottles only to find that he won’t take them. I’d be more inclined to buy if I could see them in person, but no stores seem to carry them. I don’t get it either, because every Nuby product I’ve ever had has been awesome. Thanks!

  54. I just bought Nuby bottles which were labeled BPA free on the packaging. But I don’t see those bottles in the list above. The bottles I got are:
Nuby 3Pk Non Drip Bottle 11 Oz
Nuby 3Pk Non Drip Bottle 7 Oz

Please let me know if these are BPA free. Thank you so much for this website.

  55. Hi Jhooma,

We were just in the process of updating our list to include the 7oz and 10oz Non-drip Bottle 3pks. Thanks for mentioning it!

    Alicia

  56. Hi Meghan,

In talking with Nuby, it appears that all of their wide neck bottles currently contain BPA. They are working to change that in response to the many requests from concerned parents.

    Alicia

  57. Hi,
I just discovered all this craziness yesterday. I heard somewhere that any plastics with numbers 3,6,or7 are bad.
My son’s favorite sippy cup is the:
10 oz 2 Handle Cup with Soft Silicone Spout
Also called 2 Handle No-spill 10 oz Cup
from your pictures above. You say it’s BPA free, but it has the number 3 on the bottom…
How can I know now if anything with that number is good or not? Is it better to just go by your guide (I also found one at Z Recommends) for individual items?
    Help!
    Thanks!

  58. Note also that Z Recommends has this cup on it’s list of cups that contain BPA… unless I’m not looking at the right item.
    http://zrecs.blogspot.com/2007/11/z-report-bpa-nuby.html
Two-Handle Cup with Valveless No-Spill Soft Silicone Spout with Vari-Flo Feature

  59. Hi Krista,

You’re right to avoid plastics labeled with the recycling codes 3, 6 and 7. Just be sure that the number you’re looking at on the bottom of any product is inside the chasing arrows. If it’s just randomly printed there, it’s probably just a code unique to the company who manufactures it.

The 10oz 2 Handle Cup is definitely BPA free. It is different from the 7oz 2 Handle Cup wiht Vari-Flo Feature, which you’ll find listed in our “Contaings BPA Section” at the bottom of the article.

We can’t speak for the ZRecs list, although it appears that they also have the 2 Handle Cup listed in the BPA free section. It’s just hard to know which is which without pictures.

    Hope that helps,

    Alicia

  60. I have been looking into the bpa free sippys I’ve seen a few sites that talk about plastic and non-plastic sippys that are bpa free. None of them included Nuby. It looks here like you’ve listed most of the Nuby cups as bpa-free, though I am not trying to dispute this I am curious why these other reviews didn’t put Nuby on their list. So my question is, did Nuby only just recently stop using bpa in most of their products? If so, how recently? and how have they bein sure it was removed or have they simply stopped adding it to the formula in which case is it possible that there are still trace amounts in the equipment they use?

  61. Hi Sarah,

I think the reason most people don’t list Nuby as a BPA free option is because there are too many bottles and cups that are not BPA free. It’s been an extremely arduous undertaking to identify exactly which products are which.

Nuby’s BPA free products have been that way for several years. As with many other manufacturers, they just happened to use non-polycarbonate plastic in some of their products. Now they’re working to remove BPA from all of their products, but it will still be several months before the new items are available. Until then, they still provide several affordable options.

    Alicia

  62. I’ve been wondering the same thing as Amy asked. My two handled “Grip n Sips” also have the colored hard plastic. Are these different and do they also have BPA. I did not see a reply to Amy’s question so I’m wanted to check to see if she got a reply or if they are possibly checking on this cup. My son has more trouble with the Born Free and Sigg sippy cups and really loves his straw cup with handles.

  63. How about the 3-stage Grow nurser in the 9-oz size? I bought a bunch of Nuby stuff a few months ago when I found out their products were BPA-free, excpet I didn’t know that not all their products were BPA free. Luckily most of what I have is BPA free excpet for the one sippy. This 9-oz bottle is made of the same materials as the non-BPA sippy so I am assuming the same for the 90oz bottle.

  64. Hi Violetdradonfly,

The 3 Stage Grow bottles have certainly been a source of confusion. We verified with Nuby that there are two different versions of the bottle - one is made with polycarbonate and one is made with polypropylene. We’ve added the 3 Stage Grow Nurser containing BPA to our list to avoid at the bottom of this post.

    Hopefully that will help,

    Alicia

  65. Hi

I am from Australia and have recently bought the tommee Tippe 360 ml wide necked bottle (training spout included) and the 2 pk of 240 ml wide necked bottles, all of these have handles. because I am in Australia, the bottles themselves are labelled Nuby but the packaging is tommee tipee.

I rang the tommee tippee customer sevice line and she stated that ALL of their bottle were made from polycarbonate???

I will send you an email with the pictures

    Jodie

  66. I’m sorry, but this is still confusing. The bottles I bought have “Nuby 2006″ on the bottom, so does any of this apply to them? If so, is the “3 stage GROW” bottle different from the “3 stage Non-Drip Standard Neck Bottle (11 oz)”? I have the latter. And I just can’t figure out if it’s a safe one or not. It does NOT say BPA free on the package.

Also, just to add to the confusion, I noticed that the package on my 11 oz Non-Drip Standard Neck bottles only claims that the “nurser” is BPA free - does that mean that the cap (that the nipple goes in - not the “cover” - could have BPA? Because that would still come in contact with fluid and baby’s mouth. Just seems like they could be leaving themselves a window there - have they claimed that NO PART of the bottle system has BPA for this model?

Thanks so much for your hard work on this. You should qualify for sainthood, really! :)
    Ever so grateful,
    Megan

  67. If I take the valve out of the 9oz tinted no spill gripper cup, is the cup and lid itself safe to use.

  68. This list was so helpful - I was just not in the mood to spend $12 -$15 a cup on sippy cups for my 2-year old who may very well be done with sippies before the year is out. Thanks for doing this legwork.

  69. i’m confused.. my friend got us three individually sold 9 oz nuby non drip bottles. i am not sure if they are safe or not. they were purchased probably close to a year ago. can you please let me know if they are ok or not.. thanks.

  70. So if I toss the bottom of my Nuby Two Handle Cup with Fat Flip-it Straw Top, will there only be the BPA in the flip-it part for the straw? Grr…this is the first that I’ve heard that even that part has BPA in it, but the top does fit the bottoms of my 12oz No-Spill Sippers with Flip it Straw…

  71. My daughter uses Nuby soothers. Are they safe to use?

  72. Stephanie,

Yes, the 9oz tinted cup should be fine without the valve in it.

    Alicia

  73. Megan,

    It is confusing, isn’t it?!

First, you need to look carefully at the pictures and go with what you see on our list. If you can’t match your bottles to our list of BPA Free bottles, it probably is NOT BPA free. If you are still unsure, please go ahead and contact the Nuby company to find out for sure.

Second, if you purchased bottles that state “BPA Free” on the package, they are referring to the whole bottle, not just the body.

    Best,

    Alicia

  74. Thank you Mommychicky!

  75. Megan,

We haven’t come across a 9oz Nuby bottle yet that is BPA free, so I would double check directly with the Nuby company on that.

    Alicia

  76. Michelle,

All Nuby pacifiers currently contain a small amount of BPA.

    Alicia

  77. alicia,
thanks.. i will get the serial # and info off the bottle when i get home and email them directly.. thanks.

  78. Alicia,

I used Playtex Avance before this BPA free thing came out and I was unable to find any bottles for a while. I came across this webpage and based on the information and photos you provided, I purchased the following Nuby Baby Bottles for both my children (2 yrs and now 9 month old) as well as for a friend of mine (child is now 1 yrs old):

    - 7oz and 9oz 3 Stage Grow Nurser with Handles, Standard Bottles (dark colour tinted bottles came in 3 per pack with 3 non drip nipples and 1 sippy spout)

Could you please confirm whether these bottles are BPA free or not….thanks. anne

  79. THANK-YOU SO MUCH FOR INCLUDING PICTURES! YAY!

  80. Hi Everyone,
I just purchased 8oz. and 10oz. wide neck Nuby bottles and they are BPA free according to the packaging. The Avent rings and nipples work perfect with them. If the packaging says it, it is true, right?
    Thanks,
    Shauna

  81. THANK YOU! I love that you show pictures– just the names of the products can be hard to remember when you’ve thrown-out the original packaging. I will definitely be bookmarking your website for future reference! Keep up the great work ;-)

  82. I hope this answers some questions about the flip it cups… I saw some people asking about the short cups with handles and flip it straw . I have these too, and this is what I read on ilovenuby.com:

Our products are made with polypropylene (PP) Recycle #5 and Polycarbonate (PC) Recycle #7. The (PC) products do have a minute (tiny) amount of Bisphenol A.

The majority of our No-spill cups are made with PP but the cups with the handles coming up from the bottom are made with PC. The insulated cups are both PP & PC, inside layer is PP and the outside layer is PC.

The spouts are 100% medical grade silicone.

  83. I am wondering if you know if the Nuby Fantasy forest bottles are safe? They are sold individually for about $1.70 (CND). I can’t find any info anywhere.

  84. Wendy,

I checked the international Nuby website and found that the Fantasy Forest bottles are labeled as PC which means they’re made from polycarbonate (containing BPA).

    Alicia

  85. Thanks so much…

  86. Hi there. I have Nuby bottles that were handed down to me from a girlfriend. Her daughter was born in 2005 and she used these bottles but I am having a really hard time finding out whether or not they are BPA free?? Do you know where I can look for pictures of older styles or is that information about you only knowing about product from October 2007 and on still standing?? Please let me know. Thank you so much for posting such a great amount of information about this, I was lost before I found your site!
    You rock!!!!
    Jennifer

  87. I recently purchased a 2 pack of 10 oz. no spill nuby sippy cups with an easy grip design. Are these sippy cups pvc and bpa free? I’ve read some of the comments and responses but wanted to be sure. Thank you for your time.

  88. For those of you concerned! If you are unsure if what you have has been recalled at all, you can take them to your local Wal Mart and they have a list of the recalled bottles, sippy cups, soothers and all nuby products, along with samples of them, and they will check over all your items for you and find out which ones contain BPA and which do not! They will do this with all bottles, sippy’s etc, no matter what brand!

  89. I just wanted to caution everyone with regards to the nipples used on the Nuby Non-Drip Bottles! They are very hazardous!! My son nearly choked. He is 7 months old with NO teeth we were out shopping and he was having abottle I felt something hitting my foot looked down and it was his formula spilling all over. I checked out the bottle and he had nearly bit the inner lower part (control valve) off, it was hanging on by a thin piece. Had my foot not got wet I would have never known and he probally would have choked! I emailed the company and have so far got nowhere with them. It is very dissappointing as we consumers just want to keep our children safe. I thought maybe it was just ONE bad nipple but no he did it to another one in less than 10 minutes and these bottles/nipples were less than 2 weeks old! Again, he’s toothless! I am hoping the Nuby company will fix this problem asap. But incase they dont, I ‘d like to warn parents to keep an eye on those nipples if you use them. Its sad cause my son really liked them, and so did as I as they did not leak but they will never ever be used for ANY of my children again.

  90. [...] than a latte). However, I  lifted my head out of the sand when I got an email today linking to a blog that appears to be pretty well researched and decided its time to retire them. I hope you all find the blog [...]

  91. I just bought my son the 10 oz. Nuby Easy-Grip 3 stage feeding system which has a Non-drip nipple, spout, and straw included! Does this contain BPA or is it safe to go on using? Thank you!!

  92. Does anyone know for sure if the Nuby 14 oz. No Spill Cups contain BPA? They are colored plastic and somewhat flexible, so I thought they would be safe!
    HELP!!!

  93. Kristen,

The only 14oz Nuby cup we know of is the 14oz Flip-it straw cup. If that’s the one you’re asking about, they currently contain BPA in the flip-it straw cover on the outside of the cup only. The body and lid are made from polypropylene and the straw from silicone.

If you’re still unsure, please contact the company directly.

    Alicia

  94. Thanks for the reply…These are not the flip-it cups. They are just plain no spill cups with soft spouts. Thanks for checking!
    Kristen

  95. hi
I was wondering more about the pacifiers ?
what happens if my child continue to use them?

  96. hi,Alicia,I bought the Winnie the Pooh and Friends Soft Cooling Teether for my baby,i checked what you have already posted ,but i can not find this one,so,it means that is not safe, right? here is the website, you can see the picture http://www.learningcurve.com/wps/portal/redirector?wpContentNode=wps.portal.product&wpActionName=ACTION&ACTION=targetSKU&wpForward=true&wpAction=action&sku=Y5283&locale=en_US&locale=null

  97. Thanks for the list. We were about to throw out a half dozen sippy cups that appear on the BPA free images, until we saw your list. Your list helped to clear our confussion.

  98. Why aren’t products without BPA marked that way? I just got home from Target and *hoped* I’d gotten a Nuby sippy w/out BPA but no luck. Now I have to go back :(

  99. I was just wondering about the 3-sectioned plastic plates. They come with a white lid and the plates are bright colors. I didn’t see them on the list, so I was just wondering if they have BPA or not. Anyone know?

  100. Iris,

That’s what we are pushing for - companies should be required to label their products with the materials used in manufacturing.

Hopefully we’re making it a little easier for parents to make informed decisions until that time comes . . .

  101. http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll136/trista_nina/IMGP1964.jpg

This is probably the 14oz Nuby cup that is being asked about a little further up. I just bought a whole ton of these things at WalMart last week because the lady working in the baby section said they were BPA Free. Now I’m wondering if they really are.

    Anyone have any idea??? :(

    Thanks!
    Trista

  102. Does anyone know if the Nuby CoolBite teether combo is BPA free? Image below:

  103. [...] here to see the website I found that lists the BPA free Nuby products and the Nuby products that contain [...]

  104. Bump! Anyone? :(

  105. Hi Trista,

Sorry for the delay - I’ve been trying to hunt the cup down you asked about, but I haven’t had any luck. It looks an awful lot like the 10oz Easy Girp Sipper show above, and yet it’s a little different.

Would you post the name and size that was listed on the packaging when you purchased it? That will give me a little more to go on . . .

    Alicia

  106. Kristen and Trista (and anyone else!):

I just bought the 14oz. no-spill cups for my 2 year old from Babies ‘R Us. It doesn’t say anything on the package about safety issues, because it is the old style of packaging.

However, I called the 1-800 number and spoke to the representative. She said this model is completely safe, and that it doesn’t contain any BPA or phthalates. Yay!!

You can always call the number (1-800-LUVNCARE) if you have any questions. All I had to do was give her the four digit number above the bar code from the original packaging. In this case, that number was 9830. Hope this helps!!

  107. Hi Alice,

My gal is using Nuby’s wide neck bottle and to my surprise u have mentioned that all wide neck bottles from Nuby are not BPA-free?

Now I am doubt as the bottle didnt come with box nor any lable on it. It’s 10oz. May be we should learn how to differentiate the platics?? The bottle is light green in color with thin layer (thinner than avent which my gal used previously) and it’s light weight too.

    Cheers
    -Jayne from Singappore-

  108. Thank you so much for keeping this list updated - we’ve been using the sport sippers and have been very happy with them. They clean easily and Claire loves them. I would have hated to have to replace them because of BPA.

  109. Thanks Alicia and Michelle :)

As for the packaging, Michelle’s correct - it just says 14oz no-spill cup on the package. It’s great to be able to call the 800 number and find out for sure, I never even thought of that!

Very happy to know I can use these cups with my little ones!

For those that were using Avent - these cups will also fit an Avent nipple/ring without leaking!! I’m now using them as a replacement for all of my old Avent bottles as well as a replacement for the sippy cups my older one uses. :D

  110. Thank you for this helpful information. My daughter just received a cup as a birthday present and it is a little tricky - even with the pictures. I have the one with the different colored plastic as well. I am going to call the manufacturer and give them the serial number to be safe.

    Warm Regards,
    Erika

  111. [...] Safer Sippy Cups? June 19, 2008 Filed under: Uncategorized — beelerfamily @ 9:32 am A big problem with kids and avoiding BPA’s is cups and bottles.  Glass is dangerous, heavy and EXPENSIVE.  And anyone with a toddler or preschooler will tell you there is NO WAY they are giving their kid a glass to drink out of!  Thus far, I have been content to try to avoid warm or acidic beverages for Lauren.  Yesterday, my friend Jaclyn mentioned that she heard Nuby products do not have BPA’s in them.  Excited to have a safer option for my girls to drink out of, I did a little research.  Turns out that SOME Nuby cups are BPA free… the ones with silicone spouts or straws.  You can see a well-researched comprehensive list here. [...]

  112. Alicia,
Just so you know, Zrecs and some other blogs have conflicting information about the Nuby brand and BPA.
Who are we to believe? It’s all so confusing.

  113. Hi Joanna,

I’ve noticed the discrepancies and have confirmed repeatedly with Nuby which of their products are BPA free.

I honestly believe it comes down to a couple of key points that are causing confusion

    1) Nuby’s naming system makes it difficult to know exactly which product we’re talking about. This is why we went to the effort of including images of each BPA free product. The names alone just don’t get the job done with Nuby.

    2) Nuby is an international company, so many of their products are sold in other countries, and are not available in the U.S. We focused only on products available to us to help eliminate confusion.

We work directly with the midwest Nuby distributor and I am fully confident in our list of BPA free Nuby products.

If you are still unsure, it would be worth your time to contact Nuby directly.

    Alicia
