We’ve Been Playing with Our Bottles Again . . .

The Girls and I had a wild itch to take every single bottle apart and see which nipples, venting systems, etc. would fit other brands of bottles. We came away from our mishmash of bottle parts with several interesting tidbits. This summary is based on bottles we stock in our store.

The Bottle Exchange

  • All wide neck nipples fit all of our other bottles: Born Free, Green to Grow, Sassy MAM UltiVent and Think Baby. Think Baby nipples will only work with Born Free bottles when the Born Free air vent is removed, because Think Baby’s vent is a little tube on the bottom of the nipple that goes straight down into the bottle.
  • All regular neck nipples fit all of the other bottles: Dr. Brown’s, Evenflo (includes Siliskin), Green to Grow and Weego. We’re still playing with the Nuby nipples, because they have a great little tripod-like venting system on the bottom of the nipple. This causes it to stand up a little higher than a typical nipple. Stay tuned for the verdict . . .
  • It turns out that the Dr. Brown’s venting system fits most regular neck bottles, including Weego, Green to Grow, Nuby and Evenflo. It does require the use of a Dr. Brown’s collar (they are taller than a normal collar). The reservoir tube needs to be trimmed to fit the bottle (with the exception of Weego). We’ve been using the polypropylene Evenflo bottles with Dr. Brown’s venting system. NOTE: The new polypropylene Dr. Brown’s are now available (but are in short supply).
  • We had a reader try a wide neck Green to Grow bottle with the wide neck Dr. Brown’s venting system. It didn’t fit, not even with the Dr. Brown’s collar (the collar wouldn’t tighten all the way).
  • Mother’s Milkmate storage bottles are the same size as Medela, which means they’ll fit Medela breast pumps. We also found that Dr. Brown’s (without the vent inserted), Evenflo (includes Siliskins), Green to Grow (reg. neck) and Weego fit the Mother’s Milkmate bottle ring, so they too will fit a Medela breast pump. We also confirmed with Green to Grow that their bottles fit Lansinoh breast pumps, which means all of these bottles will also work with Lansinoh - Yeeaahh!
  • It’s been reported by several of our readers that none of our bottles will work with Avent Isis breast pump.
  • Evenflo’s Comfort Select nipple is quite a neat little invention. It fits almost any regular neck bottle and serves like a wide neck nipple. Please note when using the Comfort Select nipple with the Evenflo bottles, the cap will not fit over the nipple - so traveling with it in the diaper bag may not work out so well.
  • Born Free and Think Baby’s training spouts work with all of our wide neck bottles. This is a great way to transition baby from bottle to sippy cup. Born Free spouts are sold separately and Think Baby is soon to follow.
  • It turns out the you can use of all of our wide neck nipples with Klean Kanteen sippy! And thanks to Evelyn’s tip, we can use the Born Free and Think Baby spouts instead of the Avent sippy spouts too! You’ll need to use the sippy adapter to make this work.
  • Born Free handles and sippy spouts fit the Green to Grow wide neck bottles, making a great little transition cup.
  • AND THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION IS: Does the famous Avent nipple work with any of our BPA free bottles? The basic answer is no, not really. The nipple fits all of our wide neck bottles, but it leaks from under the bottle ring/collar. We attribute this to the venting system causing the nipple to stand higher, which in turn prevents the ring/collar from tightening down completely. We do have some inside scoop on an upcoming bottle with an Avent-like nipple with a anti-colic feature. We’ve also tried the new bottle with Avent’s nipple and collar - and it fit like a champ! We’ll let you know when we have confirmation of an ETA :)

    we use & really like the bornfree… (the vent system rocks our lil guy barely spits up) and havent tried others… i will comment that the nipple does a “collapse” thing after about a months worth of regular usage (we rotate about 6/7 bottles) and he’s 3 months now… so we’ve moved to the next nipple… but apparently just in time…. i guess w/normal usage I should expect the nipple to wear out?

    I bought the BornFree set and really loved it, but the price was a little too high for me. So I bought a couple of the Nuby bottles, but my baby hated the nipple. So I used the BornFree nipple w/ the Nuby bottles and it fit perfectly - no leaks. So I just bought extra BornFree nipples for my Nuby bottles.

    I took a caulk gun “spout cutter” and trimmed the vent straws on my Dr. Brown’s in one snap. They are now short enough to fit in Gerber Clear View, Fashion Tints and Evenflo (glass and plastic).     I couldn’t stomach spending any more $$ on another bottle system. $1 a bottle was doable.

    I was stressing about what to do about my Avent nipples once I heard about the BPA in the bottles. We switched the bottles out for the base of the Avent sippy cups, which are bpa free, and voila. No need to switch the baby to a new nipple and no need to invest in a new bottle system this late in the game.

    Though I’m so mad at Avent for the bpa that I promise those sippy cups will be the last thing I buy from them… grrr… :-)

    I found out about the BPA issue when my baby was about 7 months old. She was still nursing well and switching easily from bottle to breast, so I didn’t want to switch from the Avent system. I did the same thing Susan did and used the Avent sippy cup bases with my regular avent collars and nipples. I also used the avent VIA system, but my caregivers didn’t like those as well and would often pour the breastmilk into the sippy cup base and use it instead.

    Avent sippy cup bases and VIA milk storage containters with converter ring should work with the Avent breast pumps.

    Interestingly, as soon as we weaned from the bottle, my daughter decided she only wanted sippy cups with straws and so now the Avent sippy cups I bought are not being used.

    I was wondering if anyone knew whether the first year soothie nipples could be exchanged with any of the BPA free bottles. The bottles are “very wide” mouth and since mt daughter is predominantly breastfed, this nipple seems to mimic it the best. I do not want switch now. Thanks. :)

Kind of great! Now I get to have a stainless bottle that won’t break w/a nipple that my baby likes and that won’t leak!

Because i thought scratching the plastic causes it to leach…so wouldn’t cutting it as well?     That’s a good thought, but you don’t have to worry about the Dr. Brown’s venting system leaching, because they’re made from polypropylene, which doesn’t have any BPA in it.

    It’s the bottles that contain BPA, so you don’t need to worry about using silicone Avent nipples.

    We haven’t researched Avent sippy cups, but Safemama.com list the following as BPA free options: Avent Magic Cups, Super Sport Cups.

My poor baby ends up inhaling the formula and stops breathing (luckily I have my first aid certificate). The Nuby nipples fit, but because they are the vari-flow type, you have to suck really hard to get anything out and my baby ends up thinking it’s a pacifier and goes to sleep instead while it’s in her mouth. I know that Avent and Playtex doesn’t work. I really don’t want to buy a bunch of nipples to see which would work. Thanks!!!

    Well I have the Nuk bottles and am thinking of switching to Mam Ultivent because of BPA…are their nipples similar to eachother? I dunno whether my daughter would switch or not…she usually isnt very picky…but u never know! are both nipples the same shape, like orthodontic, or is the MAM nipple like an Avent or Gerber Gentle Flow nipple?

    Also, are pacifiers also included in this BPA free thing? I thought it only mattered when the plastic was heated???

Unfortunately, all stores no longer have them on their shelves where I live. They are made of polyproylene so I’m not sure why they aren’t being sold. This could save people a lot of time and money knowing Gerber and Avent are interchangeable.

    Well, here is my answer, as I went and bought the MAM Ultivent. I tried putting the NUK First Choice nipple on. It fit, but the ring base around the nipple, that sits up against the cap is wider on the MAM nipple and narrower on the NUK First Choice nipple, making a leakage problem. The rest fits, if only the base was wider on the NUK First Choice.

    But no worry, my daughter took the nipple fine. Thank God she’s not picky…I mean she sometimes sucks on her pacifier upside down…sometimes she puts it in herself…and its wrong…lol..

    Anyway, just thought I’d share this incase someone wanted to know!

Their Gentle flow bottles they tell me are polypropylene and yes you can tell the bottles are not made of BPA (at least that’s what I thought.) I want to use their Gentle Flow bottles but can’t find them where I live. Walmart, Zellers, Shoppers Drugmart, Toysrus, are telling me they have a list of bottles that contain BPA. Gentle flow happens to be on all of their lists. Toysrus manager went as far as telling me the list was from the Government (which isn’t true - I called their main help line) I find it quite annoying that the only bottles that are on the shelves are very expensive.

I totally dreaded the thought of having to buy all new bottles and finding ones that would work with my gassy daughter. So I just went to Wal-Mart bought the cheap Parents Choice Brand that say they are BPA free, until I could get to a bigger store with a better variety. Well I decided to see if I cut the Dr. Browns Vent System if they would work together and they do so the collar fits the bottle great. So I paid 3.00 for three bottles, instead of an arm and a leg. I hope this helps some folks out that might not be able to afford new bottles.

A couple months ago I bought some Green to Grow bottles & nipples, but I hate the nipples. DD will use them, but they collapse half-way through her feeding because they aren’t vented. The Avent nipples do not fit Green to Grow. So, I’m looking for nipples that fit the Green to Grow bottles. From reading through this all, it sounds like the Born Free & Dr. Brown’s nipples will fit Green to Grow? Anyone have a recommendation to which to use? The vent system fits the GtG wide neck bottles, but you also have to use the Dr. Brown collar (because the GtG collar is too short), and that’s where the problem comes in. The GtG bottle neck is a hair smaller than the Dr. Brown bottles, so the collar won’t screw on. Guess I’ll have to buy Born Free since it sounds like that’s compatible.

I assume these are probably the same fit as the Nuk but was hoping someone had some first-hand knowlege. If I remember correctly from my son, 4 years ago, the Playtex nurser nipples and the Gerbers were interchangeable and they were such great nipples. My son loved them and never had any issues at all (gas, spitup, etc).

    We just made some changes and I have found that the Dr. Brown’s venting system, nipples and collars work in Parents Choice BPA-free bottles as well. They are about $1 per bottle! All you need to do is trim the bottom of the venting tube.

    I got my order today (thank you Soft Landing!) and have been doing some nipple swapping/experimenting myself so wanted to provide an update on some of my previously asked questions.

    The Evenflo Comfort Select Nipples (wide neck nipple which fits regular neck bottles) does indeed fit well with both the regular Green to Grow bottles and the Siliskin bottles with no leaks. This is indeed a cool little nipple! Unfortunately with the Siliskin, the bottle cap will not fit back on with the Evenflow nipple but the cap does fit back on the Green to Grow regular bottle with the Evenflo nipple. This seems to be a nice little combo!

    I previously asked if the Playtex Nurser nipples or the Gerber Nipples (called Dome Nipple), which are interchangeable and almost identical, fit with any of the BPA bottles. I did test them out on the Think Baby bottle and they do NOT fit. Think Baby’s nipple is not nearly as wide-mouth as the Playtex nurser nipples. My son loved these nipples when he was a baby so this is a wee bit dissappointing for me as I was hoping to use them on bambino 2 but don’t care for the Playtex Nurser system. I even tried switching the Playtex collar onto the Think Baby bottle, no go. Think Baby is slightly smaller in diameter.

    I didn’t buy the Born Free bottle but I will to try that one as well. (Unless someone already has) I have a feeling the Playtex Nurser nipples will probably be a bit wide for those too.

The diameter of the nipple is larger than that of the Bornfree or the SassyMam nipples, so my guess is that there isn’t a bpa-free bottle that will fit the breastflow nipple. I researched the good bottles to use and found that Avent Nipples fit with the Gerber Gentle Flow bottles. I found Gerber Gentle Flow bottles at Walgreens. I have not found that the ring allows dripping or spilling due to tightness. I have been very happy with these bottles.

We were using the Dr. Brown preemie bottles to start off with (was the only bottle he would eat from) but when I had a hard time locating the new BPA free bottles I ended up switching to the Born Free.

    But, since the Born Free are wide neck I had to switch to the wide neck Dr. Brown nipple as well and my little guy isn’t as fond of it as he was the standard size nipple. He always has little dribbles down his chin now. So, now I am here ordering Green to Grow nipples and MAM Utilivent nipples since they are very similar in shape to the standard Dr Brown nipples.

I was looking for nuby’s wide mouth bottle with handles when I found this site because nuk nipples are the only ones my twins will take and I heard they fit in nuby bottles. I can’t believe it didn’t occur to me that I could put my avent rings with nuk nipples in them on BPA free avent sippy cups. I feel so stupid because I have 2 avent sippys sitting in the cabinet. Now I dont’ even have to bother finding the nubys because the cups have handles and that’s one of the reasons I was looking for the nubys.

    It is overwhelming isn’t it? In our opinion, if the liquid isn’t touching the polycarbonate plastic and your baby isn’t chewing on the outside of the bottle, we don’t see any reason for concern.

If you have the VentAire Advanced Wide system, those nipples can be used with the Playtex drop-in system. The VentAire system (not advanced) is not compatible with the drop-in system. The person did say that the nipples on the drop-in system and VentAire systems are similar. I know the drop-in system bottle is not BPA free, but the liner and nipple is. I am not sure where your comfortability lies with this situation. The customer service person also confirmed what I had read that Playtex products will all be BPA free by the end of 2008.

    I too was on a mission to find a nipple that my baby would latch onto that would fit into a BPA free bottle.
    Nipples I’ve tried:
    Early Years Breastflow w/ tempo liner- worked great, but nipple collapses.
    Gerber Gentleflow (also found in Hy-Vee in the midwest)- nipple collapses on that too. Also tried the Avent in it and they collapsed also.
    Playtex Nursers- not a good latch.

    I finally found a nipple she would latch on to. The Gerber dome silicone nipple. It fits with all New Traditions bottles. I’m going to try out the Clear View bottles if I can find them as I just found out they are BPA free.
    These Gerber nipples also fit into the Playtex Nurser and almost fit into the GentleFlow. I’ve used them in the GentleFlow and they work if you don’t tighten it all the way or put them into the ring all the way. They do leak if you don’t get it just right though.
    I really want to use glass, hence my question at the beginning!

I am using the Avent bottle ring/nipple on the Gerber ones and the seem to work perfectly.

    The only bad thing is that Gerber recommended not to use the bottle in a bottle warmer, so it takes a bit longer to warm up the milk, but that’s ok because I now have peace of mind that my son is not being exposed to BPA.
